Ethiopia stated on Thursday that dissident soldiers from Tigray had been beaten and evacuated from the neighboring Afar area, while Tigrayan forces maintained they had just moved troops to neighboring Amhara for an offensive there.
At a news conference in Addis Ababa, Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Dina Mutfi referenced “military intel” when referring to the setback.
Getachew Reda, a Tigrayan spokesman, spoke to Reuters by satellite phone from an unidentified location.
It was impossible to verify either assertion right away.
The Ethiopian military and the Prime Minister’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
